Born July 24, 1897 Kansas
Amelia knew flying was in her future after her first plane ride Dec 1920
She was a tomboy who didn’t like to be a stereotypical girl
She kept a scrap book of newspaper clippings of successful women in male orientated fields
Rather than complete finishing school she worked as a nurse’s aide during WWI and then became a social worker
After her first flying lesson in January 1921 she saved enough money to buy her first plane in 6 months
She was the 16th woman in the world to have a pilot’s license
‘The Canary’ and Ameila set her first women’s record by flying at an altitude of 14,000 feet Oct 1922
Most famously she was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and Pacific as well as reaching many other new heights in aviation for women
Sadly she and her co-pilot disappeared during her attempt to be the first woman to fly around the world July 1937
